A COMMITTED Ipswich Jets team tackled their way to a gutsy 18-8 victory over the Burleigh Bears yesterday to post their second win of the Intrust Super Cup season.

Ian Lacey proved a handful early on in the encounter, finding the Bears defenders short as he sent Ramon Filipine down the touchline in an early sign of what was to come.

Minutes later, the Jets received a penalty only 10m out from the line. From the ensuing play, they caught the Bears short in defence, paving the way for Filipine to open the scoring in the sixth minute.

Burleigh had numerous chances to level the scores, but were let down by simple mistakes.

Gold Coast Titan Jordan Rankin was guilty of a forward pass, before launching a brilliant spiral bomb, only for the chasers to be called offside.

The Bears would be rewarded for their pressure soon after, when hulking forward Brenton Lawrence found a way through the defence to score in the 26th minute.

Eight minutes later, Ipswich found themselves on the attack again following another Bears error.

Hooker Michael Fisher caught the defence napping on the fifth tackle, burrowing his way over from dummy half. Brendon Lindsay nailed the conversion to send the score to 12-4.

Moments before halftime, a mix-up from the Ipswich defenders allowed Bears winger Michael Brophy to pounce on the loose ball to score.

In the second half, both teams were guilty of poor handling, misguided passes and soft penalties in the slippery conditions.

There was no change to the half-time score of 12-8 until the 73rd minute, when Ipswich centre Brendan Marshall placed a grubber through the defence for his winger Filipine to grab his second of the afternoon.

Lindsay?s conversion made it 18-8, a lead the Ipswich team would not relinquish.

Both teams will enjoy next weekend off as the split round continues, before Ipswich travels to Souths Logan and Burleigh meets Tweed Heads in the Men of League Rivalry Round.

I reckon Lawrence and Ridge were given runs in the Queensland Cup just to get some minutes under their belt. Rankin also played in this game, but obviously didn't have a great impact.
