Fit Henry eager to repay Titans faith

Fully fit playmaker Beau Henry says he’s determined to repay the faith of Jetstar Gold Coast Titans coaching staff after shrugging off a troublesome ankle injury which has plagued him for the past 12 months.

Henry’s first six months since joining the Jetstar Titans midway through last season have been hampered by injury, with the 21-year-old forced to undergo two separate operations to remove scar tissue from a broken ankle he suffered in Round 3 last season while playing for former club Newcastle.

But having fully recovered from his latest bout of surgery prior to the Christmas break, Henry said he was feeling the best he has in more than a year and was eager to repay the patience of Titans coaching staff heading into pre-season trial matches.

“The ankle is good now. I’ve got a lot more movement in it and it’s feeling good out there,’’ said Henry.

“I’m starting to feel fit, I’ve lost a bit of weight, and I’m starting to feel good.

“I’ve still got a lot to owe the coaches here as they’ve put a bit of trust in me to keep me around. I’m starting to get back to my best out there - running freely and enjoying it.’’

Although super fit utility William Zillman has been touted as the man likely to get the first shot at the Jetstar Titans No.6 jersey in 2012 alongside captain Scott Prince in the halves, Henry said he was eager to put his best foot forward in the club’s upcoming trial matches.

The Jetstar Titans will play three pre-season matches against the Warriors in New Zealand (Friday, February 3), Brisbane Broncos at Pizzey Park (Saturday, February 11) and the North Queensland Cowboys in Mackay (Saturday, February 18).

“I’m trying to push myself. Zilly is a great player and he’s filled in numerous spots for this team,’’ said Henry.

“I’m sitting there learning off Zilly, whatever position he plays he can do the job.

“Zilly has got the first crack but I’m definitely going to be knocking on the door.

“It’s two weeks away to playing our first game and I’m ready to play. It’s been a long pre-season and a hard pre-season so I think everyone is really looking forward to it.’’

Jetstar Titans coach John Cartwright indicated that Henry would most likely be a part of the squad which will travel to New Zealand to take on the Warriors in the first of the club’s pre-season trial matches.

Cartwright will officially name the full touring squad this Friday.

“He’ll play in the trials, he’s in full contact work and is doing everything,’’ said Cartwright.

“He’s a specialist half/five-eighth and he’s a very smart footballer who reads the game really well.

“He’s just been hampered by that ankle pretty much since he got here and unfortunately it’s going to take a bit of time to free up but he’s getting better every week.’’
