Halifax Beat Bears In Tour Clash

THE Burleigh Bears put up a good fight but were unable to overcome Halifax RLFC in their James Hanley Testimonial match in the UK on Friday night.

The Bears outfit, made up of players from the club?s Intrust Super Cup, Under 20, Bycroft Cup A Grade, Reserve and Under 19 teams, went down to the home side 42-14, but from all reports, the game itself was much closer than the final scoreline indicated.

Played at The Shay, Burleigh gave the home side a hard time of it, particularly in the first half, in the game that honoured 10 years of service to the Halifax club from James Hanley.

Fittingly, it was the home side that opened the scoring, with Lee Greenwood beating two defenders and running the length of the field before scoring in the corner. The man of the moment Hanley narrowly missed with a touchline conversion attempt.

After 15 minutes Jon Goddard showed the form that made him a fans' favourite with the Halifax supporters, scoring under the posts after a good break by Frank Watene and Sean Penkywicz. This time, Hanley made no mistake with the conversion.

The Bears replied soon after with a try in the corner to Jacob Grant to bring the half-time score to 10-4.

Unfortunately, things fell away for the Bears in the second half, with the visitors conceding 32 points after tries to Andy Boothroyd, Jon Goddard, Joe Chandler, Scott Law and a double to Rob Worrincy.

However, Burleigh were also able to add a few couple to Brad Bennett and the retiring Nick Parfitt who Halifax labelled the team?s best player.

?Burleigh made a good crack of it,? said Hanley said after the hard-fought game.
