TWEED HEADS v SOUTHS LOGAN
Piggabeen Sports Sunday, June 12 ? 3.00pm

Following two stellar performances, the Souths Logan Magpies will be confident of becoming the first team this year to knock the Tweed Heads Seagulls off their perch. The Magpies managed to keep the Norths Devils scoreless last weekend in their clash and were able to put on 40 points of their own, running in seven tries with relative ease. Tweed however, had a much more difficult time against the Northern Pride to claim their 14-point victory. The Seagulls lost Shannon Walker last weekend to a hamstring injury with Ryan Milligan again filling in as fullback. Tim Maccan also makes a return to the team from the Bycroft Cup while Ben Ridge is out to play with the Titans. The Magpies have again named double try scorer Trevor Thurling in their side, but have lost the services of James Stuart to the Raiders. Both teams have won nine games apiece in their head-to-head record. Two Tweed Heads players are on track to notch up milestones with Ryan Simpkins to play in his 50th Queensland Cup game (all for Tweed). His skipper Brad Davis only needs one more goal to become the third player to tally 400 goals in the Queensland Cup behind Burleigh?s Nick Parfitt who has 471 and former Redcliffe player Greg Bourke who kicked 403.

GOLD Coast Titans prospect Kayne Lawton scored two brilliant solo efforts, keeping the dream Queensland Cup run for the Tweed Heads Seagulls rolling with a 17-10 win over the Souths Logan Magpies 17-10 at Piggabeen today.

With the Burleigh Bears climbing into the top four with a hard-fought 24-6 defeat of the Sunshine Coast on Friday night, Lawton and fellow Titan Dom Peyroux ensured the Seagulls remained unbeaten in wet and muddy conditions.

Trailing 4-0 after Jarrod Kennedy got Souths Logan on the board early, Tweed responded through another Titan, Will Matthews, before Lawton stepped up to tear the game open with his solo effort from 30m out, handing the Seagulls a 12-4 half-time lead.

A try to halfback Michael Picker after the break closed the gap to 12-10 before Lawton produced more of his magic with another dazzling 30m effort pushing them ahead.

Skipper Brad Davis put the result beyond doubt with a field goal with three minutes to play.

Nestled at the top of the ladder, Tweed (24) holds a three match-buffer over the Redcliffe Dolphins (18), who escaped 19-18 over Wynnum to jump to second following the Central Comets upset 30-22 win over premiers the Northern Pride (17).

Just behind are the Bears (15), who moved into the top four after landing their seventh win of the season.

SOUTHS Logan put a major scare through Intrust Super Cup pacesetters Tweed Heads yesterday only to fall agonisingly short of ending the Seagulls? winning streak.

Up against a committed Magpies outfit, the Seagulls steadied in the dying minutes courtesy of a Brad Davis field goal to land a hard-fought 17-10 victory at Piggabeen.

The Ben Anderson-coached team has now won its opening 12 matches of the season to be all but assured of a spot in this year?s Intrust Super Cup finals.

In fact, it would take a major form slide for the Seagulls to miss the minor premiership given they are already three wins clear of second spot.

Despite the loss, Magpies coach Mark Beaumont can take some positives out of the trip south.

They were the first team to score after lock Jarrad Kennedy strolled through out wide but six minutes later the Seagulls were in the lead after the impressive Dom Peyroux made a searching run which led to forward Will Matthews crashing over near the posts.

Three minutes before the break, hooker Kayne Lawton scored the first of his two brilliant tries to put the Seagulls in front 12-4 at half-time.

But when halfback Mick Picker finished a great attacking raid shortly after the resumption, the deficit was cut to two points.

Lawton then stamped his class on the match with a breathtaking run to score out wide for a 16-12 lead.

Play see-sawed from one end of the field to the other for the rest of the game with the contest in the balance until Davis' field goal took the game out of Souths Logan?s reach.
