IPSWICH JETS v EASTS TIGERS
North Ipswich Reserve Saturday, June 11 – 2pm * Live on ABC 1

After playing in what is now a record fourth Queensland Cup drawn game in a season – the Ipswich Jets will be hoping to return to their winning ways against Easts Tigers. But in an interesting twist, the two teams’ first meeting in round 1 this year resulted in a 16-16 draw. The Tigers will be aiming for their fourth victory and their first back-to-back win of the season and will be aided by the return of Shane Neumann to the centres. Liufau Hala will move to the bench with the Melbourne Storm’s John Leiataua not named in the 17. The Jets have named both Marshall Chalk and Michael Fisher despite both players leaving the field in their game against Wynnum Manly with rib injuries. The Jets are also likely to be without the services of inspirational skipper Keiron Lander but Titans pair Luke Capewell and Esi Tonga have been included at this stage. In milestone news, Jets winger Ramon Filipine will play his 50th Queensland Cup game. In an added incentive to head to the game, Jets sponsor Europcar has bought the gate, allowing rugby league fans to
attend the game for free.

Watched this game on tv and there as some really good footy played. Cape well scored a couple of tries but also came up with some elementary unforced errors and until he gets that part out of his game is not up to NRL level in my opinion.

And yet he was one of our best when he was playing at the start of the season.

Injury adds to Ipswich woes

Ipswich Jets pocket rocket Ian Lacey faces a long stint on the sideline, which is the last thing his injury-riddled team needed.

Rob Williams IPSWICH Jets interchange weapon Ian Lacey faces six to eight weeks on the sideline after suffering a knee injury during his team's loss to the Easts Tigers on Saturday.

North Ipswich Reserve hosted the enthralling game of football with the Jets' caution-to-the-wind approach contrasting to the Tigers' robotic set completion- focused game plan.

The Tigers came from 10 points behind to win 24-22 over an injury- depleted Jets outfit.

Jets players fell to their knees at fulltime, exhausted and disappointed at losing a game they had every chance of winning.

But it was one of their worst performances of the year, with a 21/36 completion rate, and was a game they did not deserve to win.

In comparison, the Tigers completed 37 of 38 sets which is an incredible effort in the Queensland Cup.

The Tigers also dominated possession and the Jets defence did exceptionally well to hold them to four tries.

It was the Jets' third loss this season and they now sit fifth on the Queensland Cup ladder.

The game's sour note was the knee injury Lacey suffered late in the first half.

?It doesn't look good for him unfortunately,? co-coach Shane Walker said.

?He needs to have a proper medical but at first look it's probably six weeks for Lace.?

The Jets are already missing Trevor Exton, Tyson Lofipo, Marshall Chalk and Smith Samau from their first choice 17.

They have also been hurt by Gold Coast Titans forward ? and sometime Jet ? Sam Tagataese's mid-season move to the Cronulla Sharks.

They will need to play far better as a team to have any chance of beating the Burleigh Bears on Friday night at home.

Walker said he was not particularly bothered by his team's poor completion rate.

?That's the best the Tigers can play and we were giving it to them all game,? Walker said.

?I think it's easy to get carried away with completion rates and stats like that.

"That's not the whole story.

?We were below our best, but the mistakes we made were because we trying things and if there's an opportunity there you have to take it.

?Unfortunately it was one of those games where some of the passes didn't go to hand.

?Some of the errors at the end of the game I was a bit disappointed with.?

The Jets led for 70 minutes of the contest despite their constant errors.

Wild-haired prop Nathaniel Neale was again sensational, making 60-plus tackles for the second week in a row.

While Esi Tonga had his best game of the year, making several line breaks.

DECISIVE MOMENT:

Down by two points with four minutes left, the Jets flung the ball wide to their best attacker ? Esi Tonga.

From his own 30 metre line, Tonga shuffled and stepped to the outside of his defender and into a yawning gap.

His partner in crime Donald Malone loomed up outside him and as the cover approached Tonga flicked the ball to the wing, but Malone had begun heading infield and the ball rolled into touch.

Near Perfect Tigers Down Jets

THE Easts Tigers have gone back-to-back for the first time in 2011 with a courageous 24-22 victory over the Ipswich Jets in an enterprising match at the North Ipswich Reserve.

Easts trailed the Jets by 10 points on three separate occasions during the game but came from behind to post a crucial win in the context of their season.

Remarkably the Tigers' ball control was almost perfect - they completed 37 from 38 sets - against an Ipswich side that were often guilty of pushing the pass.

The win was even more impressive considering the Tigers lost skipper Shane Neumann and experienced prop James Stosic to hamstring injuries midway through the second half.

Assistant coach Craig Ingebrigtsen praised his team's composure without two of their senior players.

"Under the conditions today against a quality footy side (we had) no interchanges left with 15 minutes to go ... it was a big effort from us - we toughed it out," he said.

"It wasn't a case of panicking; it was a case of just hanging in there."

None typified the side's resilience more than diminutive playmaker Isaac Kaufmann, who copped a bruising but managed to post a decisive solo-try.

"For a halfback to get battered and beaten-up like he did today and keep getting up ? it was fantastic," Ingebrigtsen said.

A fired up Ipswich started the match in sensational fashion with two quick tries in the opening 10 minutes, before Easts stabilised when winger Adam Breen's fingertip control saw him latch onto a cross field kick in the 19th minute.

However, the Jets increased their lead to 16-6 thanks to the Gold Coast Titans backline combination of Esi Tonga and Luke Capewell, with Capewell supporting a long range Tonga bust.

The Tigers kept plugging away though - they set up camp on the opposition line and finally found reward when some quick hands saw Breen find an unopposed passage to the tryline, reducing the deficit to 16-12 at the break.

Ipswich opened the second half with Capewell's second off a Donald Malone break but Easts clawed their way back again when Kaufmann ducked under the defence to score with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Errors and penalties crippled the Jets and the visitors struck the critical blow when Matt Zgrajewski popped an offload in traffic for young five-eighth Rhys Jacks.

In an unblemished day with the boot Breen slotted the conversion to give Easts the lead, taking his personal tally to 16 points for the match.

A nail-biting final 10 minutes saw Ipswich chance their hand to no avail - the Tigers defence held strong for their third win from their past four starts.

Ipswich has now slipped to fifth on the ladder and could be without utility Ian Lacey (knee) for an extended period after the former Bronco was carried from the field in the second half.
