SUNSHINE COAST v BURLEIGH BEARS
Stockland Park Friday, June 10 ? 7.30pm

The newly-christened Sunshine Coast Stadium will host the second of the round?s Friday night games, with the Sea Eagles hoping to snare their first win against the visiting Burleigh Bears. Despite not being able to overcome Easts Tigers last weekend, the Sunshine Coast showed some spark ? reaching their highest score of the season in their 38-28 loss. It was also their closest losing margin of the year, which should give the side some encouragement going into the game. The home team will field an unchanged side for the contest. However, the Bears have made a few changes to the side that beat the Mackay Cutters 7-6 last week. Late round 11 inclusion Robert Apanui remains in the side, while the impressive Brenton Lawrence has not been named after he was called into the Titans NRL squad. Burleigh have the third best defensive record in the competition with only 197 points against (behind only Tweed Heads and Pride tied on 160), so they will not be making things easy for the Sunshine Coast. Bears coach Paul Bramley (Souths Logan/Mackay/Burleigh) will coach his 84th Queensland Cup game on the weekend, drawing level with Mark Gee to be equal 10th for most games coached. He has won 52 of his encounters and lost 29.

Burleigh Bears defeated Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles 24-6. We really need some sort of affiliation with an NRL club. Every other QRL club has one and it leaves us one step behind.

What happened to the Manly deal? That was great for the club last year.

What happened to the Manly deal? That was great for the club last year.

The NSWRL gave Manly an ultimatum to either have a side in the NSW Cup or not have any teams in any NSWRL competition (including Jersey Flegg and Harold Mathews and all of those comps). It would have killed all of Manly's junior teams and they were forced to cut ties with us, leaving us with a team made up of local boys who aren't quite up to QRL standard yet.

Hugh Stanley is a pretty good player, just needs to work on his defense and ball handling.. Excellent pace and he knows how to find the try line..
But considering every other team has borderline NRL players it is too much to expect the sunny coast to compete. It is ridiculous what the NSWRL has done though. Souths Logan/Canberra will be in a similar situation where no contracted players can play for the magpies anymore..

Who do the NSWRL think they are. I heard that as of 30th June, Canberra Raiders have to get all of their players out of the Souths Logan QCup team also.

Another example of why the NSWRL shouldn't run the game. It is disgusting and selfish. For generations they cherry picked the best of the BRL.

We need to do what is best for Rugby League as a whole, nationally. Three NRL teams in QLD can't service properly an entire state. Manly being forced to leave was a disgrace, Canberra... I don't even have a word for the stupidity.

Hopefully the Sunshine Coast can string some wins together in 2011. I don't want to see that team fail. It is a vital area of RL development and growth in QLD.

Bears Climb Intrust Ladder
QRL Media

THE Burleigh Bears have moved into fourth position on the Intrust Super Cup table after recording a hard-fought 24-6 victory over the Sunshine Coast.

Despite missing key playmakers Nick Swan and Kane Richards, the Sea Eagles pushed the Bears all the way in Friday night?s round 12 match at Stockland Park.

The Bears were also without key personnel due to a mounting injury toll but they were able to play from in front after a double strike inside the opening seven minutes.

From that point on the Bears muscled up in defence and did what they had to do to clinch another two competition points.

The win came at just the right time for the Bears (15), who are now a point clear of Ipswich (14) after the Easts Tigers came from behind to beat the Jets yesterday.

?I was really pleased with our attitude in defence,? said Bears coach Paul Bramley, whose side led 14-6 at half-time.

?They?ve (Sunshine Coast) got points in them. They?ll get a win soon and I reckon they?ll get a bunch of wins after that.?

The Bears were boosted by the late inclusion of Matt Pow and Marty Mitchell, along with Titans prop Brenton Lawrence.

?Louis Fanene was outstanding, he was my pick,? Bramley said.

?Riley Brown is just very consistent and is a good leader. Jamie Dowling was again very good for us and Dominic Walsh was strong.?

The only setback for the Bears were injuries to try-scoring sensation Anthony Don (shoulder) and Marty Mitchell (hand).

Both players are now in extreme doubt for next Friday?s clash against the Jets at the North Ipswich Reserve.

?With everything that?s happened (I?m satisfied with our position on the ladder),? Bramley said.

?We?ll get a few players back over the next four weeks.?
