A DEATH in the family has forced Cronulla great David Peachey to cut short his pre-season preparation with new English club Widnes and fly home to Australia.

Peachey, 31, arrived in Sydney last night and will travel to hometown Dubbo today following the death of a beloved aunty.

Paul Masluk, from Peachey's management group SFX, said the former NSW Origin No.1 had rushed home as soon as he heard the news.

"It was one of his aunties who he was very, very close with," he said.

"He's staying in Australia for about a week."

It was another shattering blow for the happy-go-lucky Peachey who was still reeling from the recent death of Cronulla legend Steve Rogers.

Masluk said Peachey was "loving" his England experience so far.

"He is really enjoying it over there. The fans have really taken him in," he said.

"He's played just the one game against one of his old teammates Michael Sullivan.

"But the coach has told him he can sit out the trials and train with the squad.

"And David's partner is expecting a baby as well in the next few months so he's loving it over there."

Widnes confirmed Peachey would miss at least the club's next pre-season clash, against Warrington on Sunday.

"The funeral takes place on Friday with David due back in the country next Tuesday," a Widnes spokesman said on the club's website.

"The club's thoughts and sympathies are with David and his family at this time."

Peachey left for England after controversially not being re-signed by the Sharks after 11 years at the NRL club.

Peachey surprisingly linked with Widnes last September even after it was relegated from Super League.

The crowd-pleasing fullback remained loyal to a deal hammered out with the English club while it was still in the Super League, with the aim of returning the team to the top flight in 2007.

Peachey made his debut for Widnes on Boxing Day with impressive results, chiming into the National League One side's shock 24-18 win over Super League side Warrington.

Peachey was one of 11 debutants in the Widnes team that beat a Warrington outfit boasting former Sharks teammate Sullivan.
