Last-minute win real delight

THE Penrith Panthers Toyota Cup side plucked a stunned rabbit out of the hat with a late 18-16 victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Monday night. As heavy rain washed away their three-game losing streak, coach Alex Melville says he was a very proud man.
Penrith trailed 16-8 with eight minutes remaining. How excited was the team after the game?

Oh mate, with a last-minute victory like that, the boys were stoked.

Was it a lucky escape or a well-deserved win?

It was a game we deserved to win. Souths scored a couple of tries off being piggy backed up the field and through a lack of concentration on our part just after half-time — which almost proved fatal. But we showed a hell of a lot of spirit to take the two points and I'm 100 per cent proud of the way they fought back. To take two tries in eight minutes in torrential conditions is rare in this sport.

How much of an impact did the poor weather have on the scoreboard?

There's normally 60 points scored in every Toyota Cup game. There was only 34 in Monday night's game.

Besides the fight back, what else impressed you about their performance?

Our commitment to defence with shoulder contact and our gang tackling.

Which players stood out in your eyes?

Theodore Stewart in the front row was brilliant and Timmy Dengate at halfback steered the side around the park again. That's now his third victory at halfback from six starts. Our hooker Blake South was very strong right through-out the clash and Damien Cook turned the game with a tremendous 35 metre try from dummy half.

The under-20s meet the Gold Coast Titans, who are placed 16th on the competition ladder, at Skilled Park on Saturday afternoon. Are you expecting a tough clash?

The Titans have been improving a lot. They beat Manly and came within two points of the Bulldogs, who are one of the competition front-runners, last week. They're getting close to a win and we need to be on our guard to make sure they don't get one against us. It's always tough going to Queensland but we've got a bit of experience now and know what we're in for.

Penrith's Toyota Cup side are placed 12th on the competition ladder, with four wins, seven losses and one bye.

Fantastic defensive effort by the boys. Nice to see a Toyota Cup match where the scores do not blow out. Well done boys keep your heads down and keep working for each other and the results will keep coming.
