Umaga quits Test arena

NEW Zealand rugby union captain Tana Umaga has announced his retirement from international rugby after playing 74 Tests.

Umaga had been the subject of specualtion since the All Blacks completed their Grand Slam tour of Britain and Ireland last November, with British media reporting earlier this week that English clubs Harlequins and Leicester had expressed strong interest in signing the Kiwi.

Umaga, 32, said today that he would continue to play Super 14 rugby for the Hurricanes, and that he would rejoin the provincial squad later this month in preparation for the coming season.

He started his representative rugby career with the Wellington side in the 1994 National Provincial Championship after previously playing rugby league - including a stint for the New Zealand Under-19 team.

I wish Tana all the best with his Super 14 Commitments and thank him for providing such great competitive rugby for the All Blacks and entertainment for us all.. we will miss you Tana... :)

Yeah I have nothing against the All Blacks... I may be a 100% Wallaby and I hate it when you beat us.. but the fact of the matter is.. the All Blacks have been an awesome team and Tana has been a awesome leader to control and lead a team of superstars to be a team of winners too.. and that is not easy.. ;)

So yeah.. I give credit where credit is due.. this All Blacks team deserves that on any day of the week and so does its captain..:)

Makes sense to call it Super 14 when we have 14 teams now in the competition :) Each to their own.

Well I am a QLD Reds fan first and foremost though there is a tinge of sadness knowing I won't get to see the great Tana Umaga again in the All-Black jersey. I remember the early days where he formed a 1-2 combo with Jonah on the wing for the All-Blacks that was unrivalled.

A player that truly deserves the tag of 'great' - Tana will be missed from the internatonal game.
