Bramley's Bears Win Intense Clash

IT seemed the Souths Logan Magpies and the Burleigh Bears were intent on creating a new classic rivalry at Davies Park yesterday with both teams turning up the intensity.

Burleigh coach Paul Bramley?s return to Davies Park was a successful one, with the Bears eventual 24-4 winners.

However, the game itself was a much closer contest than the scoreboard suggested.

In a low-scoring first half, Burleigh managed to take a 6-4 lead into the break.

But it was the Magpies who opened the scoring through Wade Liddell early on in the game before the visitors hit back through some good field position and big centre Clinton Toopi.

Both teams were committed in defence, forcing each other into some uncharacteristic errors in attack, and the game was occasionally marred by some ugly spats.

While the first half was a genuine arm-wrestle, the second was more free-flowing from the Bears? point of view, with Martin Griese crossing three minutes into the half to extend their lead.

The Magpies played without luck and were down a number of key players, with skipper Phil Dennis not taking to the field.

Souths Logan could have been next to score, but lost the ball in the process of putting it down in a missed opportunity that summed up their second half.

They also lost other players to injury throughout the match, including Ben Cronin to a nasty head wound.

The Bears wrapped up the game with two late converted tries to Marty Mitchell and Jimmy Andersen right on the siren, giving the Gold Coast team a much needed win away from home.
