Casino wins O'Dwyer Shield

NAGGING brother from Casino proved to be the catalyst for St Mary's Primary School to be a last-minute inclusion in the annual O'Dwyer Shield rugby league match against St James School Banora Point, earlier this week.

It's a match usually contested between Banora Point and St Joseph's Tweed Heads in honour of Ryan O'Dwyer, who died of leukaemia in 1998.

Ryan was the younger brother of current National Rugby League player, and Gold Coast Titans utility, Luke O'Dwyer.

The boys attended both Tweed Heads and Banora Point primary schools in the early 1990s.

The entire Titans squad were given the day off training to attend the match.

The 25-strong player roster watched on as the Under-12 team from Casino defeated St James 10-0 to claim the O'Dwyer Shield.

Their coach, Jason Holmes, was thrilled with the result.

?I had been trying to get a game against the school all year,? Holmes said.

?My brother teaches at St James and coaches the rugby league team, so we were the obvious replacement.

?The kids were thrilled to be part of such a big game in front of many of their heroes.?

The O'Dwyer Shield is an important event in the Tweed Heads community with the Titans being involved every year since they came into the NRL competition in 2007. St James had previously won the shield every year since it began being contested in 2006.
