The horse racing industry is in shock this morning with the news Stathi Katsidis - the regular jockey for Cox Plate contender Shoot Out - has been found dead at his home in Brisbane.

It is understood there are no suspicious circumstances.

Katsidis, 31, rode more winners than any other jockey in Australia in the racing season ended on July 31.

He is the brother of world-rated boxer Michael Katsidis.

The Toowoomba family has endured their share of controversy.

The jockey had this year moved into the ranks of elite jockeys after a chequered past, including drink-driving and drug convictions.

Katsidis, who lived in Brisbane, rode Shoot Out to victory in the $1.3 million AJC Derby ar Randwick in April.

Katsidis was the front page of The Courier Mail newspaper's QWeekend magazine liftout on Saturday, detailing his efforts to turn his life around after problems with drugs and alcohol.

In the article, he blamed the extreme dieting required of jockeys for some of his wayward behaviour, which included an arrest for drink driving and positive tests for ecstasy and appetite suppresants.

"The thing with losing weight all the time is that it plays tricks with your mind," Katsidis told QWeekend.
