Toyota Cup: Round 26 Preview

Matt Russell for Fox Sports Wed, 01 Sep 2010 15:25:00
We are set for a thrilling final round to the Toyota Cup with six games to have a bearing on the finals. Fox Sports commentator Matt Russell previews Round 26.

Sound familiar?

The Titans host the Tigers on Friday with a big prize on offer ? 8th spot.

It was exactly what happened in 2008 when the Gold Coast beat the Tigers in the final round to leapfrog them into 8th.

Will history repeat?

The Titans came from behind to beat Cronulla patiently last Saturday.

The Tigers were well below their best when upset by struggling Melbourne on Sunday.

A draw would be enough for the Tigers, who would love to ?buy? more time to get Jake Mullaney back from a hamstring injury, and still hold hopes of improving on last year?s grand final defeat.

A win could see them finish as high as seventh.

NYC Titans through to finals

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans’ NYC side has booked itself an 11th hour finals berth with a 24-18 win over the Wests Tigers in a thriller at Skilled Park this evening.

The Titans looked down and out early before scoring a brilliant 78th minute try through halfback Cody Walker to seal the last gasp victory and leapfrog the Tigers into eighth spot on the ladder ahead of next week’s finals series.

Walker and winger Ryan Tongia were outstanding for the Titans, with Walker bagging a double and Tongia scoring a hat- trick of tries as the Gold Coasters kept their opponents scoreless in the second half.

The Titans began the second half in spectacular fashion as Tongia beat his man down the outside and threw a beautiful pass back inside for Walker to score the try.

Five-eighth Jordan Rankin failed to convert as the Titans trailed 18-12, 47 minutes in.

The Titans kept the foot on the accelerator as centre Dominic Walsh was at his elusive best with a determined run linking up with Tongia who went in under the posts to get his third try of the night.

Rankin converted from in front as scores were level at 18-all, in the 50th minute.

The match became the ultimate arm wrestle and it looked like neither team would edge out a victory until some Walker and Tongia brilliance stole the show, as Walker made a break up field kicking a perfectly timed kick threw to Tongia who passed back inside to Walker to seal the win.

Earlier it was the Tigers who opened proceedings as halfback Jay Florimo raced away from dummy half exposing some lazy Titans defence.

Sironen converted as the Tigers took a 6-0 lead, seven minutes in

The Tigers caught the Titans napping again on the blind side as bullocking back rower Ben Murdoch-Masila barged his way over out wide.

Sironen failed to convert as the Tigers held a 10-0 lead, in the 10th minute.

The nightmare run continued for the Titans as simple handling errors led to flying fullback Sama Sauvao scoring out wide off the back of a beautiful bullet inside pass taking the score to 14-0, 18 minutes in.

The Titans finally had some luck go their way with a repeat set that saw the backline kick into gear as Walsh threw a beautiful ball for Tongia to score in the corner.

Rankin failed to convert as the Titans were back in the contest at 14-6, in the 23rd minute.

Tongia was in again as a sneaky dummy from the play the ball had him over untouched right next to the corner post as Rankin failed to convert again leaving the score at 14-8, 32 minutes in.

The Titans inconsistency continued as a spilled ball on the try line was pounced on by interchange player Limoni Kamuta for the easiest of tries as the Tigers extended their lead to 18-8, in the 37th minute.

Gold Coast Titans 24 (R Tongia 3, C walker2 tries; Rankin 2 goals) defeated the Wests Tiger 18 (J Florimo, B Murdoch-Masila, S Sauvao, L Kamuta tries; Sironen goal

It was one of the best moments ever when they scored that amazing try and came over and celebrated with The Legion! I didn't get my phone out fast enough but I got some of the action on video. But they went nuts and so did we!

Legion and the NYC Titans... a partnership made in heaven!

Well done boys, we are so proud of you all!
