NYC Titans in heartbreaking loss to Cowboys

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans NYC side’s finals hopes have been dealt a blow after suffering a heartbreaking 24-22 loss to the table-topping North Queensland Cowboys at Skilled Park tonight.

After doing well to level the scores up at 22-all with three minutes to go, the Titans looked like sneaking away with a draw, before a crucial penalty to the Cowboys in the final minute of the game gifted the Cowboys the two-points.

The penalty was awarded to the Cowboys in front of the posts after a sideline official deemed Titans forward Josh Coyle's charge down attempt on Cowboys playmaker Michael Parker-Walshe was late after a failed attempt at field goal.

The Titans remain in the top-8 for the time being but could slip back to tenth if the Tigers and Knights get a win this weekend.

The Titans opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Ryan Tongia juggled a Jordan Rankin cut-out pass before offloading a pass to Blake Anderson who did well to stay in the field of play and plant the ball down inside the corner-post.

Rankin was unable to add the extras, leaving the Titans with an early 4-0 lead.

The Titans then extended their lead in the 13th minute when Cody Walker snuck out from dummy-half to find space on the blind side and deliver a nice pass to put Dominic Walsh over the try-line, with Rankin converting the Titans shot out to a 10-0 lead.

The good start continued for the Titans after Walsh barged his way over to score his second try in similar fashion to his first, Rankin’s conversion was waved away but the Titans had a handy 14-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes.

The visitors hit back in the 25th minute after winger Will Topou ran across field before sneaking his way through a gap in the Titans defence to plant the ball down untouched, Kyle Feldt added the extras narrowing the Titans lead to 14-6.

The Cowboys closed the Titans gap in the dying moments of the half after an offload from Aiden Day created a hole for Michael Parker-Walshe to score under the posts.

Feldt added the extras from in front to reel the Titans lead back to 14-12.

An error by the Titans with a minute remaining in the half handed the Cowboys perfect field position, but the Titans withheld the last ditch effort to take a 14-12 lead into the half-time break.

The Cowboys opened the scoring in the second-half with an unconverted try in the 43rd minute when Moses Pangai charged across the line to put his side in front for the first time in the match with a 16-12 lead.

The Titans hit-back in the 47th minute when Walsh pounced on a Walker grubber to grab his hat-trick for the afternoon and bring the lead back in the Titans favour.

Rankin’s conversion bounced away off the upright, leaving the Titans with an 18-16 lead.

Cowboys centre Pangai was sinbinned for 10 minutes in the 53rd minute after giving away a cheap penalty which saw the game erupt in an all in melee.

Despite being a man down the Cowboys took the lead back in the 60th minute when crafty halfback Michael Morgan weaved his way through the Titans defence to score next to the posts.

Feldt added the extras to give the Cowboys a 22-18 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

A knock-on by the Cowboys deep in their own half with three minutes remaining gifted the Titans a perfect opportunity to level the game up and they took full advantage when hooker Matt Srama showed great desperation to carry three Cowboys defenders over the try-line and plant the ball down.

Rankin’s conversion was waved away and the game was tied up at 22-all.

The game was set to end in a draw but a Josh Coyle charge down attempt on Cowboys playmaker Parker-Walshe handed the Cowboys a contentious late penalty in front of the posts and with Feldt calmly plotting the conversion over the Cowboys snuck away with a 24-22 win.

The Titans will look to hit back next week when they take on the second placed Sydney Roosters at the SFS on Monday night.

North Queensland Cowboys 24 (W Topou, M Parker-Walshe, M Pangai, M Morgan; K Feldt 3 conversions, K Feldt 1 penalty goal) defeated Gold Coast Titans 22 (D Walsh 3, B Anderson, M Srama; Rankin 1 conversions)

Right hand defence was always going to be a problem and that's where the Cowboys scored all their tries. Dom Walsh had an outstanding game, not only because he scored three tries but all facets of his game were first class. Apparently there is a big chance he will be moving on at the end of the season as he is off contract and has only been offered a very sub- standard contract to remain. That's very disappointing if we lose a player of his potential as he apparently has been offered only peanuts for 2011.
