Burleigh Extend Tigers' Pain

AS has so often been the case this year, the Easts Tigers came close but they were not quite good enough to grab the win, going down 36-24 to the Burleigh Bears at Langlands Park on Saturday.

In a bright start, the Tigers opened the scoring in the early moments of the game with Isaac Kaufmann crossing to give them the lead.

But Burleigh showed why they have been near the top of the competition for much of the year when they responded soon after, first through Jordan Atkins who proved too elusive for the Tigers defenders and again through a powerful run from Jimmy Andersen.

The Bears had the better of the attack for much of the half, and the Tigers were forced to defend on their own line after conceding a number of line drop-outs.

Burleigh were then awarded a penalty, and from close range, Brad Baldry collected defenders like flies to sticking paper before managing to get the ball down to give his team an 18-6 lead.

With half-time approaching, they were in again from the kick-off, when Richie Williams put the ball down over the line after the Bears made a bust downfield.

But when it seemed like any possibility of the Tigers mounting a challenge was gone ? the Tigers scored a last-gasp try after the half-time siren had sounded.

Burleigh had been awarded a penalty ? but the ball found its way into the hands of the Tigers and Matthew Ruthenberg crossed to narrow the Bears? lead to 22-12.

That try had obviously lifted the home side?s spirits, and the Tigers came out committed in the second half and their enthusiasm in defence caused the Bears to lose much of their previous structure in attack.

But after applying some sustained pressure on Easts line, the Tigers finally cracked and the Bears were in again to open the scoring in the second half.

They didn?t have to wait long for their second, when a Williams chip ahead had a favourable bounce for the Burleigh chasers and Aktins went in for his second try of the afternoon and the result was assured for the Bears.

But the Tigers didn?t drop their heads ? although Liam Campbell did drop his pants on his way to scoring his first of two tries for the afternoon.

The Tigers now face a tough road trip up to Barlow Park to face a resurgent Northern Pride while Burleigh will play Redcliffe in next weekend?s TV game.

At Davies Park, the Souths Logan Magpies returned to their winning ways, defeating the Ipswich Jets 34-12.

Although it was a scrappy game where both sides were guilty of making errors, the Magpies were in control for most of the match and took a 16-6 lead into half-time.

Marc Herbert crossed twice for the visitors, while Reece Robinson, Michael Brophy and Quentin Laulu-Togagae all added to their try-scoring tally this year.

Souths Logan play the in-form Mackay Cutters this week in what promises to be a cracking match.
