View Full Version : Gold Coast to integrate player records?

It seems the Gold Coast plan to integrate club records with that of past Gold Coast incarnations.

This from the Rugby League Annual.

The club intends to invite players from the three former Gold Coast outfits, the Giants (1988-89), Seagulls (1990-95) and Chargers (1996-98) to join a Titans Old Boys Club and they plan also to incorporate the club records of the former outfits into their own records, rather than starting afresh.

It means that Preston Campbell's first game for the Titans would become his 15th for the Gold Coast club, having appeared 14 times for the Chargers.

I think this is an absolutely fantastic idea and I completely support it, especially the Titans Old Boys Club. It gives the club immediate history.

I am glad that they are embracing the past and not shying away from it.

King Wally would be a member of the Titans Old Boys Club!

This is great news. Would even be great if at the end of the season or perhaps the start we could see a Queensland "Old boy" Match. The greats from all players from the gold coast former teams and brisbane broncos play in a charity match.

As for the Stats carrying over, Why not. Im sure South Sydney didnt start again from scratch. It would also give the young blood from the side something to aspire too.

We can start saying "WE'RE BACK!" now.

Sure the old records weren't fantastic, but I look forward to rewriting them.

It is pay back time! :box:

hmm. i don't really agree. we're a new entity in the same city, i'd rather distance ourselves from past failures and set a fresher image of success.

A club is only as good as its history, And though we havent had much success in holding a team on the coast, We have had some miraculous players play under the Gold Coast banner. I am all for remembering what was, What could of been, And what will be.

we're a new entity. This is crux - are the Titans a new team or not?

If they are, it doesn't seem right they can just co-opt another team's records as their own.

If they're not a new team, what is the relationship between old and new, obviously other than just a nebulous notion of location?

The Gold Coast Titans are a new team for the Gold Coast. It would be wrong to just try to forget the past and pretend that the chargers, seagulls etc didnt exist. They represented the Gold Coast the same as the Titans will. So this is a move in the right direction :)

I think this is a good move, its good to embrace the past while also emphasising the future.

I just hope that this move doesn't kick up the same stupid arguments I've faced about records as a Dragons fan.

You know what I mean - Dragons have never won a premiership, all the titles before the merge don't count, blah, blah, blah.

As I understand it though, this decision is the NRL's to make - not ours....

I could be wrong on that though.

It would be wrong to just try to forget the past and pretend that the chargers, seagulls etc didnt exist. Exactly, their records should be separate, unless the Titans are actually the Chargers re-badged. So this what I'm looking for, evidence or reasoning that this is indeed the case (other than emanating from the Gold Coast)

Don't get me wrong, it's only a minor ripple, but a subject I have a personal interest in - stats.

Well that one is/was fairly clear cut, SGI has 0 premierships, St George 15, Illawarra 0. Just as Wests Tigers has 1, Balmain 11, Wests 4.

One day my team will win the comp... one day. If it isn't 2006 then it might just take a while :(

Yes definitely different owners different focus in a different era

If they are, it doesn't seem right they can just co-opt another team's records as their own..

I think this is more to recognize the rich rugby league history and players who represented the coast more than co-opting records

As far as the relationship between us and the Old Boys, I spoke to Ian Buchanan who is the General Manager Operations and Media who added:

We are saying that because they played for the Gold Coast NRL teams in the past and they deserve to be recognised as an important part of the Gold Coast's Rugby League history. We're not claiming them as our own as in Titans that would be a ridiculous move but how it all works is a work in progress at this point. If you asked the former players they think it is a great idea especially after their first unofficial get together a couple of weeks ago.

Hope this helps *Paul*

I keep League stats (http://stats.rleague.com/rl/rl_index.html), the problem as I see it, statistically either the Titans add to the Chargers record, or they start anew. I can't see a valid way of expressing that the Titans are both a new club and an old club at the same time.

Anyway, we'll see how it pans out, come 2007.

I agree with Paul.

Titans has got a chance to become a new team and bringing back the clubs history will be just making the Titans the same old Gold Cost Team.

I have to correct you on one aspect officially the first Sponsor was the OZ ROCK CAFE they did a promotion down in Sydney in November 1987 with Ron Gibbs in his Gold Coast Giants gear sitting on a Harley Davidson on the Darlinghurst Street Overpass at Kings Cross, but before the 1988 season kicked off the OZ ROCK CAFE went belly up.

Hi Deegan,

I don't know if you guys want to incorporate this idea for the site, but I have compiled complete player stats for each of the Titans signiings thus far.

These stats include - first grade games (NRL and Super League), Interchnages, tries, goals, field goals, overall points total, representative records, and they are all broken down in season by season, club by club apeearances.

Let me know if you want to incorporate these into the site.

Cheers,

Parra Petty
