ROOKIE Titans forward Bodene Thompson will cool his heels for three weeks after Gold Coast elected not to fight a charge for a high tackle that left Raiders utility Travis Waddell nursing a broken jaw.

While Thompson had claimed the tackle had been a "clean hit", the NRL match review committee disagreed.

They whacked Thompson yesterday with a grade-five high tackle charge and the Titans have elected to cop the three-match suspension.

Match review committee chairman Greg McCallum said the severity of Waddell's injury had not impacted on the decision to charge Thompson.

"It's the action of the player that is under review, not the outcome of the incident," McCallum said.

"He had his arm down by his side, and probably three years ago wouldn't have been charged, but three years ago the code was changed to take into account that players could be found guilty of careless tackles if they made contact using their shoulders with the head of an opponent."

Thompson has impressed in his three games off the bench this year. His place is likely to be taken by returning prop Michael Henderson.

Titans teammate Luke Bailey escaped charge despite being placed on report for a trip against the Raiders.

Bailey was put on report after he stuck out a leg in a bid to stop Shaun Fensom in the 33rd minute of Saturday night's win over the Raiders at Skilled Park.

While McCallum said there was little doubt Bailey's actions were intentional, but the actual contact with Fensom was relatively minor.

"A player is found guilty of tripping if he intentionally brings a player to the ground with his foot or leg," McCallum said.

"In Luke's case the player he made contact with didn't go to the ground - you can't be guilty of tripping unless you trip the player over."

Newcastle's Mark Taufua could miss one game after he was charged with striking in the 50th minute of the loss to Manly on Saturday. He can escape a ban with an early guilty plea.

Gold Coast's Thompson takes early plea
March 30, 2010 12:54PM

Gold Coast backrower Bodene Thompson will miss three NRL matches after pleading guilty to a high tackle which left Canberra's Travis Waddell with a broken jaw.

Thompson reduced his possible suspension by one match by taking the early plea, the rookie forward to miss crucial games against North Queensland, Melbourne and St George Illawarra.

Waddell was due to undergo surgery today after he was left with fractures to both sides of his jaw when a shoulder charge from Thompson collected him flush on the side of the head.

The only other player charged from the weekend's matches, Newcastle prop Mark Taufua, won't miss any games after pleading guilty to a grade one striking charge.
