LOL indeed... although I think this is what NSW needs if they are to beat a QLD team that will once again have a killer backline.

Before you criticise the forwards and bench, it's not like the usual suspects have been winning these series, and my guys score a lot higher on NRL dream teams. And as much as I'd hate to see Presto playing for the enemy, he's got more football talent in his left pinky toe than a thousand Kurt Gidleys stapled together or any other schmuck they'll put in there instead of him. He's ****ing earned it.

NSW Origin: Don’t Pick Lyon

It’s still only early season, but Scrappy Coco takes a hard-line and kicks off the chatter about Origin selection for 2010 amongst the NRL News faithful. Fortunately for Queensland supporters, they have a virtual Australian side that picks itself.

Apart from the apparently retirement of Darren Lockyer, the Queenslanders are set for yet another scorching lineup with the likes of Slater, Inglis, Smith, Thurston, Price and Civoniceva to name a few.

But for NSW, not only are they struggling with selections – apparently the NSW selectors are also at a loss as to who to use as the captain.

While NSW selectors have always struggled with loyalty, one things for sure – they should forget Jamie Lyon altogether for 2010.

This has nothing to do with Lyons form, the former UK Man of Steel is playing well for Manly and is a strong leader for the Sea Eagles.

But while Lyon has thrown his hand up for the captaincy – why has his attitude changed so much in the past few years?

After returning from the English Super League and settling into the Sea Eagles, Lyon immediately contacted NSW coach Craig Bellamy and opted out of NSW selection.

He was later urged to reconsider and subsequently took a spot with the Blues.

However, to hear that he is being considered for the captaincy should make every NSW supporters blood boil. While Manly fans have a right to support their man, for most NSW folk – a player that doesn’t show commitment and passion should be shown the door.

Could you imagine a Greg Inglis or a Jonathan Thurston saying at the peak of their career, “Look I am going to give the Queensland Jersey a miss this year”

What a joke! It would never happen.

That’s why Lyon should never be a captain of the Blues side, let alone be lucky enough to wear the treasured Blue jersey.

NSW need to pick not only on talent, but on a physical, passionate basis. Guys like Greg Bird, Paul Gallen and Luke O’Donnell have had their critics in the past and certainly aren’t angels – but they would die for the Blue Jersey and you’ve got to salute them for that.

There will be some strong contenders for NSW Origin this year, Beau Scott has certainly put his hand up big time and even Willie Mason as a bench player could come into contention given his strong form up North. Again, the big man has his enemies in the media and public – but this guy is another who lifts a gear when wearing the Blue.

Show respect to those who show the jersey respect.

Pick a NSW side on passion even before ability. Queensland were doing this years before they had a world beating team and they were still almost unbeatable back then.

Hornby quits rep footy, and Lockyer likely to follow lead

DRAGONS captain Ben Hornby has made the shock decision to rule himself out of contention for the Blues halfback job by advising NSWRL officials he was retiring from representative football.

And Hornby is expected to be joined on the sidelines during the coming State of Origin series by Brisbane and Australian captain Darren Lockyer, who will make an announcement on his representative future on Tuesday.

Players who do not want to be considered for representative selection this season were required to apply in writing for an exemption by March 31, although Lockyer has been given until after this weekend's round of matches to make a decision.

ARL chief executive Geoff Carr yesterday confirmed that Hornby had officially asked to no longer be considered for representative selection and qualified for an exemption as he has played 10 seasons in the NRL and recently turned 30.

With the benefit of a full off-season training at halfback after spending the previous summer recovering from shoulder surgery, Hornby is in perhaps his best form since making the switch from fullback in 2008 and was under strong consideration by the NSW selectors for a fourth Blues cap. He also played a Test at halfback against Great Britain in 2006.

''We have received just one application, from Ben Hornby, and as Ben meets the criteria the NSWRL board has approved it,'' Carr said. Hornby's decision may have an impact on the Origin prospects of Dragons halves partner Jamie Soward, with Roosters pair Mitchell Pearce and Todd Carney, Canterbury's Brett Kimmorley and Newcastle's Jarrod Mullen believed to be the main contenders for the No.7 jersey.

Roosters captain Braith Anasta, Canberra's Terry Campese, Gold Coast's Greg Bird, Cronulla's Trent Barrett and Soward are the leading five-eighth options, but Knights and NSW captain Kurt Gidley will also be considered for a playmaking role if the selectors choose Parramatta superstar Jarryd Hayne at fullback.

Blues fans may get an early indication in the May 7 Test against New Zealand at Melbourne's new AAMI Park if Lockyer decides to bring down the curtain on an illustrious representative career in which he last year broke records for the most appearances for Australia as a player and as captain, as well as being the Kangaroos' greatest try-scorer.

Lockyer, who turned 33 last week, said yesterday he would make an announcement on Tuesday. While it is believed he would like to play on at Test and Origin level, the lack of depth and experience at the Broncos appear likely to persuade him to stand down following the club's successive defeats to the Raiders and Warriors. Brisbane play the Roosters at the Sydney Football Stadium tonight.

''I guess after round one things were looking a lot more brighter and positive but two weeks down the track circumstances have changed,'' Lockyer told Channel Seven yesterday. ''Tomorrow night's game is not going to be the be-all and end-all in terms of my decision but where the Broncos are at is obviously important and is in the forefront of my mind when it comes to making a decision. I have to weigh it all up. It is a big decision and things can change rather quickly. I could have made my mind up a month ago but things can change.''

Most definately a bolter. Can't help but feel the talking up he got during the past few weeks from the media attributed to his selection. And he is a wasted selection on the bench. Where will he play when he comes on?

Really, it's like the NSW selectors WANT to lose.

Who's on the panel, Wally Lewis, Allan Langer and Gorden Tallis?

Doug was asking the tough questions of Daley on fox sports 2 just now. Daley with his same old talking points. Sure, Hayne was your best player from the wing last year. If a winger is easily your best player game after game, you are going to lose game after game.

Love your work, Laurie.

Well as a Queenslander I am happy there is no Bird, Jennings or Carney. And that Hayne is at wing not #1.
