Jets don't need Will to win

Last week’s Ipswich man of the match Will Zillman will miss the Jets game this weekend being on Titans duty tonight.

Sarah KeayesTHE Ipswich Jets will have to win without last week’s match-winner Will Zillman when they tackle the Redcliffe Dolphins on Sunday.

The classy fullback’s startling form in the Jets 32-16 win over the Easts Tigers earned him a recall to the Gold Coast Titans custodian spot after regular Titans fullback Preston Campbell was ruled out of tonight’s clash against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium.

Campbell was knocked unconscious in the Titans win over the Warriors last week.

But Jets coach Glenn Lazarus said his team was not a one-man band and their Queensland Cup performance against Easts was proof.

“Zillman was man of the match but the team completed 80 per cent of their sets in the first half and 70 per cent in the second half which showed it was not just Zillman that played well,” Lazarus said.

“If we complete 75 per cent of our sets every game we should win most matches.

“Rugby league is a pretty simple game if you hold onto the ball more than the opposition you will more than likely win.”

Zillman’s performance against a star-studded Easts Tigers outfit was the talking point of Round 1 of the Queensland Cup.

Zillman scorched through the Tigers defence on several occasions. He scored two tries, and threw the last pass for Smith Samau and Michael Fisher tries.

The Fisher four-pointer will surely feature in any Queensland Cup tries of the year compilation.

Five-eighth Todd Riggs chip kicked for Zillman near halfway, Zillman scooped the bouncing ball, swerved past the fullback before being tackled from behind only to throw an impossible 10 metre flick pass to Fisher who jogged 15 metres and scored under the posts.

“We will have to learn to win without Zillman because I doubt we will see him in Jets colours this season,” Lazarus said.

“It was always obvious the Titans would take him back from us this week.”

Luke Walker will step in to the vacated fullback role, a position he played in during the Jets pre-season trials.

Smith Samau comes from the bench to the right wing.

Marshall Chalk, an Ipswich junior, is now the only Titans contracted player in the Jets line-up for the Dolphins clash.

Lazarus said the only part of the Tigers match he was disappointed with was the late tries conceded by the Jets.

“Those tries were soft and they were due to individual lapses and those players have been spoken to about that,” Lazarus said.

“The Tigers had some very good backrowers so we always knew they would be hard to stop on the fringe.”

It is likely that Ian Lacey will be ruled out for the match, after failing to recover from a quad strain which stopped him playing the Tigers game.

Todd Riggs is also under an injury cloud.

Redcliffe Dolphins v Ipswich Jets
Dolphin Oval Sunday, March 21 – 3pm

WITH both teams coming off impressive opening round victories, this match should be a cracker. The Jets have lost William Zillman – the hero of their opening round victory over Easts – but have named experienced pair Danny Coburn and Ian Lacey for their first outings of the season. Zillman has won a recall with the Titans after his stunning two-try performance against the Tigers. Luke Walker switches from the wing to fullback, with Smith Samau moving from the bench to the flank previously occupied by Walker. The Jets have two survivors – Coburn and Marshall Chalk – from their 2002 grand final team that played Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval. Tough Redcliffe prop Chris Farrell plays his 50th Queensland Cup match. Farrell is part of a strong forward pack that includes big men David Hala, Ben Jones, Kris Kahler and Matt Hand****.

Jets crash and burn in Redcliffe

THE thud as the Ipswich Jets came crashing back to Earth could be heard throughout the Queensland Cup yesterday.

The Jets went down 40-10 to a Redcliffe Dolphins team pumped up in front of its home crowd.

Ipswich completed just 55 per cent of their sets in the first half in wet conditions but remained in the game at the break, down just 10-4. Things didn’t improve in the second half however and the weight of possession gifted to the home team eventually told.

“We just let ourselves down,” returning Jets stalwart Danny Coburn said.

“We dropped too much footy and gave away too many penalties. It’s a tough competition so you’ve got to turn up with you heads in the right place.”

Anything less and you pay the price, particularly against the Dolphins at Dolphin Oval.

Tyson Lofipo and Jacob Ling were the try scorers for the Jets while Brendon Marshall landed a solitary goal.

The Jets were disrupted during the week with the loss of key backs Ian Lacey and William Zillman.

However, Coburn said it was no excuse.

“It was a good week at training,” he said, stumped for reasons behind his team’s display.

“They came out pretty well and we were just off the pace.

“Our ball control was ordinary.

“We gave them plenty of chances with the ball and we had to work hard in defence. It’s pretty disappointing after last week.”

“Last week” was a reference to the Jets’ inspired opening win over Easts when they appeared to be a different side to yesterday. “We just didn’t complete our sets and get to our kicks,” Coburn said.

It was the one thing the Jets worked hardest on at training that let them down, leaving Coburn scratching his head.

“Definitely ball control,” he said.

If there was anything positive to be taken from the game, Coburn couldn’t come up with it when put on the spot yesterday evening.

“It’s hard to say,” he said.

“I guess there’ll be something to come out of it but at this stage it’s pretty disappointing.”

While he wouldn’t say it, one positive was the return of Coburn himself following a rib injury.

“The ribs were okay,” he said.

“It was good to get a few minutes. A bit of match fitness would be good.”

The Jets return to the North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday to take on Norths Devils. The Devils made it two from two with a 22-12 win over Tweed Heads at Bishop Park on Saturday.

In the FOGS Cup, the Ipswich Jets continued their poor start to the season.

The Jets went down 48-0 as the Dolphins inflicted Ipswich’s second loss from two games.

It was better news for the Jets in the FOGS Colts. Ipswich beat Redcliffe 34-6 for their first win of the season. Brody Cochrane and David Faamita both scored two tries for Ipswich.
