Great to see due recognition to those who contribute to the community! Let's hope the media now gives it the publicity this sort of work deserves!

Congratulations Titans!

Wow I feel like we just won a trophy, this is a title of tremendous prestige and honour and it is very well deserved. The Titans run such an expansive and growing community department and we barely hear anything about it.

The Gold Coast Titans were awarded the Telstra One Community NRL Club of the Year for providing $1million worth of funding over four years to volunteer-based Rugby League associations throughout the club’s Gold Coast catchment area, as well as for their support of Youthlinx, YHES House and Mother’s Milk brand through The Gold Coast Titans Community Foundation.

The Titans also do much more supporting and donating many local charities and fundraising efforts, visiting schools and running programs such as Environmental Cares, My Hero Reads Too, Titans Mathletics, the Titans Learning Centre program as well as lots of rugby league development. The Titans also run a wheelchair rugby team.

At a gala ceremony at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art, the Jetstar Titans were honoured as the Telstra One Community NRL Club of the Year for providing $1million worth of funding over four years to volunteer based Rugby League associations throughout the club’s Gold Coast catchment area.

The club was also recognised for its support of organisations such as Youthlinx, YHES House and the Mother’s Milk Bank through the Gold Coast Titans Community Foundation.

Jetstar Titans Managing Director Michael Searle was on hand to accept the award alongside the club’s own community award winner, Preston Campbell.

In total throughout 2009, the Jetstar Titans:

• Made 1179 community appearances;
• Travelled 22,000km to reach the club’s catchment area;
• Spent 1312 hours in the community;
• Donated 350 signed jerseys;
• Donated 250 signed footballs;
• Donated 2300 game day tickets;
• Donated 300 of training gears
• Distributed 45,000 Titans posters.

The Jetstar Titans receive $10,000 to put towards the club’s community program from Telstra as part of the award.

The award could not have been achieved without the efforts of crowd favourite Preston Campbell, who was recognised as a finalist for the Ken Stephen Medal – an award he received last year for his tireless efforts in the community.

The pint-sized dynamo said the One Community Club of the Year award was deserved recognition for the amount of effort the club puts into giving back to the community.

“I’ve been to three other clubs but I’ve never been to a club that puts so much effort into doing things in the community – whether it be programs for young kids, the disabled or even things like mens groups,’’ said Campbell.

“I said when I first came up here, one of the reasons I wanted to join the club was because they wanted to do so much work in the community and they’ve stuck to their word.’’

Other finalists in the Club of the Year category included the Dragons, Bulldogs, Panthers, Rabbitohs, Eels, Knights and Warriors.

Titans the pride of NRL

THE Gold Coast Titans can step up their quest for the club's maiden premiership title knowing they are the pride of the National Rugby League when it comes to work in the community.

NRL boss David Gallop paid tribute to Titans chief executive Michael Searle, his staff and players after the competition new boys celebrated their third year by last night being named the Telstra One Community NRL Club Of The Year.

The Titans edged out a host of other clubs, including the Dragons and Bulldogs, by providing $1 million in funding over four years to volunteer-based rugby league associations throughout the Gold Coast catchment area.

"For our newest club and a club that's so important to us strategically, it's a huge result for them to take out the Telstra One Community Club Of The Year Award," said Gallop after presenting the award before more than 250 guests at a function in Sydney last night.

"These awards recognise the important role rugby league plays in communities across Australia."

The Titans' efforts also included the club's support of Youthlinx, YHES House and MothersMilkBank through the Gold Coast Titans Community Foundation.

Gold Coast star Preston Campbell was shooting for two straight Ken Stephen Medals for his work in the community but this year the individual player award went to Parramatta's Nathan Hindmarsh.

For 31-year-old Campbell, his work as a role model with indigenous and non-indigenous children and Lifeline, as well as in his hometown of Tingha, saw him named a finalist alongside the likes of Bronco Nick Kenny.

But Hindmarsh was awarded the gong for his dedication to community programs such as Can Assist, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Hope Rwanda, The Nathan Hindmarsh Cup and his ongoing work with numerous One Community programs.

"It's very humbling to receive this award when you look around the room and see some of the people here who have done some amazing work in their local communities," said Hindmarsh.

"The players here tonight are involved in all sorts of community work.

"We know how much it means to people but we do it because we love it and it means a lot to us to be able to help out where we can."

It wasn't just the Titans who did the Coast proud, with Ross Bennett a finalist in the AAMI Service to Refereeing Award won by Canberra's Julie Hanson.
