Proteas win toss, lose Kallis

SOUTH Africa won the toss and sent Western Australia in to bat in the opening match of its Australian tour at the WACA Ground in Perth today.

Overcast conditions have greeted the tourists, who are preparing for the first Test against Australia starting in Perth on December 16.

The Proteas suffered a blow when leading batsman Jacques Kallis was ruled out of the match with an elbow injury.

Mark Boucher will captain the side while Graeme Smith nurses a finger injury.

Shaun Pollock, Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel will lead a strong Proteas bowling attack, with Garnett Kruger named 12th man.

Australia Test opening batsman Justin Langer will captain the Warriors, while Mathew Inness will carry the drinks.

Not terribly encouraging for the Proteas. Smith has been loud with the fact that his bowlers are rubbing their hands together at the thought of playing at the WACA, but without some marked improvement and plans they will be cannon fodder.

Jacques Kallis, the South Africa vice-captain, may find himself ruled out of South Africa's second three-day tour match after aggaravating a chronic elbow injury during a practice session at the WACA ground in Perth on Sunday.

A scan on Kallis's left elbow - first injured during South Africa's recent tour of India - showed that there was a slight tear and some inflammation of a lateral tendon. The injury has already seen Kallis sit out a tour match against Western Australia, currently being played at the WACA. Shane Jabbar, the team physiotherapist, hoped Kallis would be fit for South Africa's three-day tour match against a Western Australian XI, starting at the University of Western Australia on December 11.

Kallis's absence meant Mark Boucher, the wicketkeeper, took over as captain for the match against Western Australia with Graeme Smith also out with an injured finger.

The first Test against Australia starts at Perth on December 16.

If Kallis misses the first test then i think SA have no chance. Looking at the scorecard from day 1's play i assume that they've made the mistake that a lot of touring sides have made when they've gone to the WACA, they've thought that all they have to do is bowl quick & in doing so forgot about line & length.

Not looking good for SA when the team coming last in the Pura Cup can put 400 on you and declare. Be good to see how the bats go. Makes me wonder if the South African bowlers have fallen into the trap of just trying to blast people out at the WACA rather thatn bowling\thinking them out.

Warriors close their innings

South Africa has survived a few tense overs and is 0-12 at lunch on day two of the three-day warm-up match against Western Australia at the WACA.

A B De Villiers survived an early appeal for LBW, but apart from that scare, the South Africans have looked comfortable.

Earlier in the day, the Warriors resumed on 5-306, after a century from Adam Voges and half-centuries to Marcus North and David Bandy.

However, the Warriors soon lost three quick wickets in the morning session to find themselves 8-343.

Bandy (64) was the first to go when an attempted pull shot off the bowling of Charl Langeveldt skied into the air and was caught at point.

Shawn Gillies followed next over after edging Makhaya Ntini to gully for 20.

However a 48-run partnership between Beau Casson and Steve Magoffin led a solid-revival, before the Warriors declared their first innings at 8-391 shortly before lunch.

Charl Langeveldt bowled superbly in the morning session, and finished with figures of 4-104 for South Africa.

Warriors on top at WACA

South Africa has reached 4-116 in reply to Western Australia's declared first innings score of 8-391 at tea on day two of the tour match at the WACA.

WA debutant Shawn Gillies has ripped through the visitors' top order, snaring 3-20 from six overs after a solid start by the South Africans.

Openers AB De Villiers and Jacques Rudolph put on 71 before Gillies was brought into the attack in the 21st over with immediate effect.

The paceman bowled De Villiers with just his second ball for 27, and then dismissed Rudolph four balls later - caught at point for a well-made 43.

Gillies soon had his third wicket when Ashwell Prince top-edged a short ball which flew into the air and was easily caught by Steve Magoffin at fine-leg.

Gillies bowled with good pace and bounce, and seemed to continually trouble the batsmen.

Herschelle Gibbs momentarily settled the ship and reached 25 with some glorious shots but was bowled by Edmondson just four minutes before tea to leave the Warriors with the upper hand.

Earlier in the day, WA resumed on 5-306 before losing both overnight batsmen in consecutive overs.

Yep - I thought they would be more competitive too - though they have 2 more games before the start of the series and I think you'll find the test series will be tougher. South Africa will lift for Australia.
