IPSWICH v SUNSHINE COAST
Saturday, July 25 @ Briggs Road 3pm

THE team with the second best defensive record in the competition meets the team with the worst defence in this intriguing clash at Briggs Road. Remarkably, last-placed Ipswich is the team with the second best defensive record and the Sunshine Coast is the side sitting pretty in fourth spot, despite conceding more points than any other side so far. This rather odd comparison further demonstrates the unpredictable nature of this year?s competition. The Jets have been ultra competitive this year, but the finals now seem an impossible target after last weekend?s heartbreaking 22-21 loss to the Easts Tigers. Sunshine Coast coach Brandon Costin has already labelled the match a ?danger game? and is urging his charges to display the same professionalism and attitude that underpinned their gutsy 22-16 victory over Tweed last weekend.

Last Minute Conversion Seals Draw

A STUNNING sideline conversion from Trent Hodkinson has salvaged a crucial draw for the Sunshine Coast in their thrilling clash against the Ipswich Jets at the Briggs Road Complex.

The Sea Eagles were outplayed for the majority of the round 18 clash, but still managed to snare a share of the competition points after Hodkinson?s heroics with the boot in the 79th minute.

In a great finish to an entertaining contest, the Sea Eagles narrowed the gap to two points when impressive back-rower John Grieve barged over in the left corner.

Hodkinson landed the difficult conversion in front of the Jets bench to level the score at 24-all.

And that?s how the score finished up, despite Ipswich?s last ditch raid in the final 40 seconds after the Sea Eagles turned over possession early in the tackle count.

The draw put an end to Ipswich?s faint hopes of figuring in this year?s final series.

But for the fourth-placed Sea Eagles, the one competition point could prove invaluable given the tight nature of the most unpredictable Queensland Cup season on record.

While the Sunshine Coast displayed plenty of fight to get back into yesterday?s match, there is no denying that the Jets threw away another great opportunity.

Ipswich led 18-14 after a great try from Michael Ryan in the 65th minute and then pulled further in front when Ramon Filipine crossed in the corner.

Matt Srama?s sideline conversion handed the Jets a seemingly unassailable 24-14 lead.

But the Jets made a number of schoolboy mistakes in the final eight minutes to put their defensive line under a stack of pressure.

The first mistake came when the Jets ventured too close to the sideline and lost possession after a wild pass back in-field was gleefully accepted by that man Hodkinson.

The visitors went deep on the attack and were rewarded with a try to Ryan Walker in the 74th minute.

The Jets invited further trouble when Jackson Nicolau failed to get a clearing kick away from inside his own half.

Grieve scored from the next play and Hodkinson?s golden boot did the rest.

It was another bitter pill for Ipswich coach Glenn Lazarus to swallow.

His side played some great football in the first half against a star-studded team that included giant Manly forward Adam Cuthbertson.

The Jets raced away to an early 8-0 lead after tries from Matt Srama and Lorenzo Maafu.

The Sunshine Coast finally opened its account in the 32nd minute when Dennis Sandow combined brilliantly with giant forward Tim Brown.

Brown made a clean 40m break through the middle of the field before turning the ball back on the inside to Sandow.

Ipswich led 8-6 at half-time and was the first to strike upon the resumption of play.

Rampaging forward Sam Tagataese broke through the line to score a great solo try that had the Jets on the front foot.

But the Jets couldn?t put the finishing touches to a strong effort in another deflating finish for last year?s minor premiers.
