It has now been confirmed that the 2008 Defence Force World Cup will take place in Australia between 03 ? 16 Nov 2008. The competition is part of the celebrations of 100 years of Rugby League in Australia. It is part of the Festival of World cups that include the Student, Ladies, and Police World Cup competitions as well as the Rugby League World Cup.
The Combined Services Rugby League Association,(CSRLA) will be sending a representative side to compete in the Defence World Cup.
The team will compete as Great Britain Armed Forces (GBAF) and will compete in the colours of the Great Britain RL team
Confirmed in the competition are Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea and Russia.
The teams will compete in 2 leagues of 3 teams as follows
POOL A
AUSTRALIA
NEW ZEALAND
COOK ISLANDS
POOL B
GREAT BRITAIN
RUSSIA
PAPUA NEW GUINEA
GBAF will play their first game against Russia as a curtain raiser to the Eng v New Zealand World Cup pool game at the Energy Australia Stadium, Newcastle on Sat 8 Nov 2008. They will then play PNG to round off their group games. All other games other than the final will take place at the CUA Stadium Penrith.
The final of the competition will be the curtain raiser to the World Cup Semi Final at The Sydney Football Stadium on Sun 16 Nov.
The Squad will be selected from an initial train on Squad of 45 players, 15 from each Service. This will be reduced to 27 after the 2008 Bab**** Inter Service Championship in September. Coach for the tour will be Mr Ray Unsworth. He is an extremely well respected coach within the game and has coached the Combined Services before. He will be assisted by WO Wayne OKell MBE RN.
