A FREAK post-match accident to Anthony Laffranchi during a recovery session has soured the Titans' 30-22 win over North Queensland in Cairns.
While dual international Mat Rogers produced an eye-catching audition for the vacant Gold Coast No.6 jersey, all the attention was on teammate Anthony Laffranchi back at the team hotel.
The Titans forward crashed through a wooden floorboard during the team's recovery session at Rydges Esplanade.
Laffranchi, co-winner of the Titans best-and-fairest last year, was stepping out of the spa when his leg went through a floorboard up to his knee.
Team doctors rushed to Laffranchi's aid and he was assisted up to his room for immediate treatment.
A visibly hurt Laffranchi will undergo further tests today.
Earlier, Rogers showed why he will almost certainly be Scott Prince's halves partner this year after the duo masterminded the Gold Coast's win in front of a sell-out 12,000 crowd.
With Prince, Rogers and fullback Preston Campbell pulling the strings, the Titans scored four tries to race to a 24-0 lead after 29 minutes but the Gold Coast had to survive a late Cowboys comeback.
Titans coach John Cartwright was delighted with Rogers' new partnership with Prince.
"He was great for their first time together," he said. "It was good to see them strike up a bit of a combination."
Cowboys coach Graham Murray conceded his side lacked polish without Johnathan Thurston but he was pleased with the second half.
"We have to handle that (missing Thurston) a bit better. Probably our attack wasn't as smooth at the back end of our sets and we could probably be a bit better with our kicking."
