Former Raiders player's drug sentence suspended- ABC.net.au

Former Raiders player Jason Bulgarelli has been sentenced by a Canberra court for attempting to possess ecstasy tablets.

Bulgarelli was given a three-month prison sentence suspended from today.

In September 2004 a package arrived at the Canberra Raiders headquarters addressed to James Brow.

There was no one at the club with that name and the package was handed over to police.

Bulgarelli had told a lower court the package was never intended for him and today a Supreme Court jury was set to hear his case.

But at the last minute the football player pleaded guilty to attempting to possess 17 tablets of the drug, admitting that it was for his personal use.

Prosecutor David Mortars said his late plea showed little remorse for the crime.

But Justice Malcolm Gray noted that the incident cost Bulgarelli personally and financially.

The football player lost a contract worth more than $100,000 after he was charged.

In addition to the suspended sentence he will have to pay a $1,500 fine and was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Tough penalty (more the contract loss) for a social drug that plenty of people in the community use. Having said that it is illegal and should pay the penalty.

Go to any club and you will find hundreds of people with E's in their pocket. Did you know Ecstasy was originally used by Counsellors and Psychologists in the US for counselling sessions, especially where people had differences\anger issues.. It was extremely successful in getting people to talk and overcome issues. The US Gov banned it when people started to take the drug for social use and found that they enjoyed. It has also been proven that there are more crimes and violence commitedd with alcohol than Ecstasy.
