Gold Coast Blaze have created basketball history.

In front of a traditionally hostile Townsville crowd, the Blaze turned on their best display yet to score a 111-98 victory over the Crocodiles.

The win will go down as the National Basketball League club's first, and it came less than two weeks after the entire squad trained together for the first time.

Although thrilled with the victory, Blaze coach Brendan Joyce maintained that pre-season results mean nothing.

"It's a good feeling," he said. "But pre-season results don't mean anything.

"What's important is how we're playing and last night was really positive.

"You could see improvements since we played them (last Thursday)."

The Blaze got off to a slow start and trailed 31-27 at the first break but found their rhythm in the second quarter.

The visitors turned a four-point deficit into a six-point lead by half-time (58-52) and extended the buffer to 19 (92-73) with an outstanding third term.

Townsville edged closer in the final term but the Blaze held firm to upset the 2006/07 finalists -- and all in the absence of centre Ben Melmeth, who Joyce opted to rest because of groin soreness.

Guard James Harvey starred for the Gold Coast and finished with a game-high 29 points.

Import Jason Crowe chimed in with 20 points in a performance Joyce described as the American's best yet.

Juaquin Hawkins hit 19 points while Casey Frank managed 19 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench.

Daniel Egan (23), Rosell Ellis (22) and Michael Cedar (14) top-scored for the Crocodiles.

More significantly, Crocs' sharpshooter John Rillie, who cost the Blaze victory when the two sides met last week, was held to eight points by the defensive combination of Harvey, Crowe and Daniel Joyce.

"We did a heck of a job on Rillie," said coach Joyce.

"It was the second time around, our imports had seen him and we were aiming to keep him between 10 and 14 points, so we certainly did that."

The Blaze travel to Mackay today ahead of a rematch with the Crocs tomorrow night.

Joyce said he was undecided on whether Melmeth would return to the pine for the contest.

The Gold Coast's final pre-season game, against the New Zealand Breakers, will be held at The Southport School on Monday.

Club officials yesterday announced admission -- limited to the 1000-seat capacity -- to the game would be free of charge.

Meanwhile, tickets to the Gold Coast's NBL debut against the Brisbane Bullets on September 19 are reportedly selling fast.

10/09/2007 - Blaze Claim Hatrick of Wins, With One Point Victory Over New Zealand Breakers

The Gold Coast Blaze will go into the regular season with their confidence sky high after edging out the New Zealand Breakers by the barest of margins at The Southport School tonight.

The Blaze have just completed a memorable, unbeaten three game campaign in the last 5 days. After accounting for the Townsville Crocodiles twice in the far North, the Blaze returned home to defeat a tough Breakers outfit 85-84.

The Gold Coasters galloped out of the blocks in tonight?s game to open up a 7-0 lead before the Breakers started to find their range. Three triples from noted bomber Oscar Foreman, kept the Breakers in touch before another maximum from Phil Jones gave the Breakers their first lead at 26-25, which they took to the first break.

The Kiwi?s managed to stifle the Blaze offence in the second quarter and with Breakers Veteran Power forward Tony Ronaldson proving a handful with his inside, outside game the New Zealanders surged to a handy lead. A late three pointer from Blaze Rookie Nic Campbell kept the home side in touch at the main break but still trailing 39-51.

The Gold Coasters are fast becoming known as third quarter specialists and they again turned up the defensive pressure whilst the Breakers long bombers went cold. It was the Blaze?s own Kiwi connection of Pero Cameron and Casey Frank that was the catalyst for the Blaze resurgence with Frank in particular all over the defensive glass. With Jason Crowe, James Harvey and Ben Melmeth executing at the offensive end the Blaze erased the 12 point deficit to go into the last quarter tied up at 61.

The Breakers came out firing early in the last quarter with Foreman scoring five unanswered points, however the Blaze were determined to keep their streak going. Juaquin Hawkins started getting to the rim at will and when Melmeth scored back to back baskets to break the deadlock midway through the quarter the Blaze were never again headed. Oscar Foreman nailed his fifth three on the buzzer to reduce the margin to one but the Blaze took the spoils with a very satisfying victory in front of a near full house.

Head Coach Brendan Joyce was clearly elated with his team?s recent progress.
?The development in the last two weeks has been more than I expected, we will taper off now as we prepare for Brisbane in nine days time,? said Joyce.

Joyce was philosophical about his team?s third quarter heroics that again put the Blaze in a winning position.

?This is our third game in five days and I felt we looked a bit flat in the first half. I told the guys that we would cancel training tomorrow and it seemed to work, which means I probably should have told them before the game,? a smiling Joyce added.

The league?s newest franchise are fully fit and firing as they start the final preparations for their historic, first game against the Brisbane Bullets at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday, 19 September.

Just bought my tickets. You only get one chance to go to a club's first ever game.

The prices are pretty good. It cost me $76 for 2 adults and 4 kids.

Congrats to the Blaze on their first game. They ended up losing by ten after being up by 15 in the 2nd quarter. They were playing great basketball but then dropped their bundle with a heap of turnovers and poor shots. They ended up about 20 points down and were mounting an exciting comeback to get witin 8 of the Bullets but ran out of time.

The main difference in the scoreline was our poor free throws. They probably missed about 15 for the game and could have won it if they sunk them like they would have in practice.

The atmosphere was great although I thought the crowd was a bit disappointing for their first ever game. The convention centre was about 3/4 full and plenty of them seemed to be Bullets supporters. Hopefully they can build support with a few wins.

If you get a chance to go along, give it a go. The springers at half time were awesome. It's amazing the different ways they can score using the trampoline.

Go Blaze.

Their colours look very "Titan like".
Agree, they looked nervous towards the end of the game, must have looked at the scoreboard and realised they were leading.
