England Rugby League World Cup venues

Monday, August 27, 2007 - 1:30 PM

The International Rugby League Federation today announced that England will kick off its 2008 World Cup campaign in Australia’s tropical north on October 25 and already an army of British fans are signing up to join the Aussie invasion.

The much awaited tour schedule sees England take in pool matches at Townsville against Papua New Guinea (October 25), in Melbourne against Australia (Sun Nov 2) and Newcastle against New Zealand (Sat Nov 8).

The tour marks the centenary of England and Australia contests which were born when the Kangaroos landed at Manchester’s Tilbury Docks in September 1908.

“The rivalry between Australia and England is legendary and the incentive to take the World Cup trophy at this moment in time couldn’t be greater,” England Coach Tony Smith said today.

“The England team is really looking forward to the World Cup and we can’t wait for our first fixture in Townsville. This autumn we will be stepping up preparations for next year’s tournament when we first play the historic Centenary International as the Northern Union against the All Golds, and then take on the Kiwis as Great Britain.”

Kangaroos skipper Darren Lockyer, who is getting a first hand insight into the talent heading Australia’s way as a guest at this year’s Carnegie Challenge Cup Final, says his team mates are under no illusion about the challenges they face.

“The last World Cup in 2000 seems like an eternity ago and since then the combination of the Tri-Nations and the number of internationally qualified players who have emerged in both the NRL and Super League make 2008 a whole new ball game.

“Catalans Dragons in the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final is a reminder that each nation is gathering strength at the right time.”

Already record numbers of Britsh Rugby League supporters have registered with travel agents to buy tickets which have been put aside for fans supporting England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland in their bid for World Cup glory.

The first World Cup Partnership as official UK travel agent has today been awarded to Traveleads who are in partnership with Howes Etc under the brand OZ08.

OZ08 Tour Leader David Howes said: “Hundreds of British fans have been patiently and excitedly waiting for the go-ahead to book their round-the-world tours.

“They can now enroll on an official trip to support England in the first World Cup Down Under for over 30 years, while enjoying the tourist delights of Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Manly and Townsville gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

“OZ08 are offering a choice of three, four or five week packages, all with a unique Rugby League flavour and optional sightseeing excursions, details available at www.traveleads.co.uk or 0113-242-2202.

“Our World Cup Partnership ensures that this trip of a lifetime is crowned by the guaranteed provision of prime match tickets, right through to the final in Brisbane.”

Tony Smith urged fans though to make it a working holiday.

“There are some beautiful spots to visit between matches but it’s also important our players see plenty of English flags and English supporters at the games.” he said.

“It really gives you a lift to see people who have gone to the trouble of supporting their team abroad. They really could be our 14th man in the big games.”

Fans can keep up to date with all the 2008 World Cup action through the official website www.rlwc08.com. The new look site will take fans on every step of the World Cup journey with team histories, forums, competitions and all the latest World Cup news.

What kind of support will we get in Townsville and Newcastle from the local populations?

I think the matches will get huge support from the fans.

How many Poms will be there, interesting... mostly ones touring I'd imagine.

Though Newcastle isn't far from Sydney at all.
