Gold Coast Titans player Paul Carter’s family ‘furious’ over drink driving charge

RISING Titans star Paul Carter has been stood down and is facing severe club and NRL sanctions after driving the wrong way down Orchid Avenue before being busted by police with a blood-alcohol level almost four times the legal limit.

The 22-year-old P-plater was partying in the Surfers Paradise nightclub strip in a midweek binge until after midnight yesterday when he got behind the wheel of a Holden Cruise.

Police on foot patrol stopped the car as it headed the wrong way down Orchid Avenue.

The footballer recorded a blood-alcohol level of 0.193 and was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of liquor.

He was also charged with disobeying a no entry direction and failing to display his P symbol.

Titans chief executive Graham Annesley confirmed Carter had been stood down from Monday’s clash against the Melbourne Storm and could face further sanctions after a joint investigation with the NRL integrity unit was completed.

“The stand-down is the immediate action we’ve taken and we’re working our way through the issues with the NRL integrity unit,’’ Annesley said.

“We’ve had some discussions with the integrity unit but they’ll continue so we’ve taken the initial step of standing him down from the game on Monday night.

“The investigation is not complete at this stage.

“I don’t expect it to be a long process but we need to make sure that we’ve got all of the details we need to make sure we’ve completed our consultations with the NRL before we make any further decisions.’’

Carter’s licence was automatically suspended and he has been ordered to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on July 3.

However, he has already been read the riot act by his parents, including famous father Steve Carter who was a premiership player for the Penrith Panthers and represented NSW in State of Origin.

Insiders said the family was “furious” with the young star and made no secret of their disappointment when he was forced to call them after being charged by police.

Rumours of the arrest spread quickly but it is understood Carter was reluctant to front up to Titans management which has made it clear it will no longer tolerate off-field behavioural issues.

Annesley hinted that was the case when he said the club was still in the initial stages of discussions with the integrity commission.

“We only got most of the information this afternoon,’’ he said.

It’s not the first time a Titan has run foul of the law for drink-driving charges, with prop Matt White slapped with a $25,000 fine in 2011 after he was caught by police on the Gold Coast Highway near Mermaid Beach with a blood-alcohol reading of 0.154 and Jamie Dowling fined 25 per cent of his salary — an estimated $15,000 — after blowing 0.117 last year.

Sources said the club contacted the Queensland Police Service asking for confirmation one of their senior players had been arrested.

Police yesterday were “angry” at the antics of the young Titan and said it was proof no one was above the law.

“Most important thing is that the law does discriminate against anyone, whether they are high profile or not,” police said.

“It does bring a clear message to the public that this behaviour will not be tolerated.

“For the player to record a reading of 0.19 at that level, that’s a fair drink and it significantly dangerous to all members of the public.”

“These players have a responsibility — so many young people look up to these players as heroes — it’s a shame when this is how it ends.”

Carter has been one of the real finds for the Titans this season, having joined the club from the Bulldogs.
